11 Indian Mysterious Places That Will Spook You

India is a country where you will find a lot of buildings with amazing architecture, and a lot of beautiful scenery. But everything is not what it seems. Some of these places carry a spooky tale with them. Read on to know about some of these spooky yet amazing destinations.

1. Kumbhalgarh Fort, Rajasthan



 This is the birthplace of Maharana Pratap; it is also known as the Great Wall of India because it is the second largest wall in the world.
According to legend, in 1443, Rana Kumbha, the Maharana of Kumbhalgarh, was initially repeatedly unsuccessful in attempts to build the fort wall. A spiritual advisor advised human sacrifice and building a temple where the head would fall, and building the wall and the fort where the rest of his body would lay. According to popular folklore, Maharana Kumbha used to burn massive lamps that consumed fifty kilograms of ghee and a hundred kilograms of cotton to provide light for the farmers who worked during the nights in the valley.


2. Dumas Beach, Gujarat

 According to popular belief, this beach is haunted because of being a Hindu burial ground. Some say they have heard whispers in the night, telling them not to go forward. While some say this is just superstition, some say there have been spooky incidents on the beach.

3. Brij Raj Bhavan Palace, Rajasthan


 The 178-year-old Brij Raj Bhavan Palace of the former princely family of Kota in Rajasthan has a resident ghost, namely that of Major Burton, who, while serving as the British resident to Kota, was killed by Indian sepoys during the 1857 Mutiny. The sepoys killed Major Burton and his two sons in the central hall of the building. According to the tale, an elderly man with a cane in his hand, the ghost of Major Burton does not harm anybody. But during his night visit, if any of the guards are sleeping or dozing, Major Burton gives them a slap.

4. Ghost Town of Kuldhara, Rajasthan

 This village was inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins. According to the legend, the prime minister of the state fell in love with the daughter of the village head and wanted to marry her. He threatened the village with dire consequences if they did not adhere to his wish. The Paliwals held a council and people of 85 villages left their ancestral homes and vanished. Before leaving, they put a curse on Kuldhara that no one will ever be able to settle in their village thereafter. To this date, the village remains barren, left almost the same as its inhabitants had left it centuries ago. It is also said that people who have tried to stay there at night have been chased away by strange paranormal phenomenon.


5. Aleya Ghost Lights, West Bengal

 Aleya is an unexplained strange light phenomena that is attributed to some kind of unexplained marsh gas apparitions that confuse fishermen, make them lose their bearings, and may even lead to drowning if one decided to follow them, moving over the marshes. Local communities in the region believe that these strange hovering marsh-lights are in fact Ghost-lights representing the ghosts of fisherman who died fishing. Sometimes they confuse the fishermen, and sometimes they help them avoid future dangers.

6. Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan

 There are two legends narrated to the history of the fort city which is reported to be haunted and no one is allowed to remain the precincts of the fort at night as per a notice board put up by the Archaeological Survey of India at the entrance. One version of the legend is that a sadhu named Baba Balanath lived within the fort area. It was his injunction that any houses built in the precincts of the fort should not be taller than his house and in case the shadow of any such house falling on his house would result in destruction of the town.

In another version, a wizard cursed Bhangarh before he died, after the princess foiled his plan to make her fall in love with him. Some deaths have been reported due to these paranormal activities too.

7. Roopkund lake, Uttarakhand

 Human skeletons are visible in the clear water of the shallow lake when the ice melts for a month. Along with the skeletons, objects like wooden artifacts, iron spearheads, leather slippers rings etc. were also found. When a team from National Geographic magazine retrieved about 30 skeletons, flesh was still attached to some of the skeletons. Later studies placed the time of mass death around the 9th century AD (1200 years old).

The local legend says that king of Kanauj, Raja Jasdhaval, with his pregnant wife Rani Balampa, servants, dance troupe and others went on a pilgrimage to Nanda Devi shrine and the group faced a hail storm with large hailstones, from which the entire party perished near Roopkund lake.

8. Savoy Hotel, Mussoorie

 Lady Garnet Orme is believed to haunt The Savoy, where she was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Apparently, strychnine had been poured into her medicine bottle. The case came to a dead end when Lady Orme’s doctor was also found dead of strychnine poisoning a few years later.

9. GP Block, Meerut

Many people have reported seeing a group of men sitting around a table while playing cards and drinking alcohol. Some have also seen a woman wearing red clothes.


10. Jamali-Kamali Masjid, Delhi

Jamali-Kamali Masjid, located inside the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Jamali, is believed to be haunted. The place is named after Jamali Kamali, two renowned sufi saints who were buried here in 1535. The place is notorious to get an unsettling feeling once you enter inside the tomb. People also say that you can hear all kinds of disturbing noises calling out to you. These noises are accepted to come from the nearby graves. The Jamali Kamali Tomb is an unsafe to visit during night time.

11. Ganga and Brahmaputra Delta

Mistpouffers or Barisal Guns are unexplained sounds that resemble a sonic boom that have been reported in many waterfront communities worldwide. In India especially, they have been heard in the delta regions of Ganga and Brahmaputra. While they resemble the sonic boom of a supersonic jet, what’s even mysterious is the fact that they have been reported from times before any airplanes were invented. These unexplained sounds are still reported and continue to puzzle experts.
