In his police complaint, Anuj Singh, the victim's brother, said that his sister Poonam Singh was routinely tortured by her husband and in-laws. "We got Poonam married to Sanju Singh in February this year. Our father gave cash and household items to Sanju's family as dowry. However, they were hell-bent on a bike and kept pressuring my sister for it. We pleaded with them on several occasions and told them that we could not afford to buy them a new bike, but they did not listen to us," Anuj said.

The grieving brother said that on Thursday he received a distress call from his sister. "She was crying inconsolably. She told me that she was beaten up by her husband and his parents. On Friday, one of their neighbors, Ranjit Singh, called me up and told me that my sister was burnt to death. I couldn't believe my ears. I rushed to her house, which is not too far from our village, and found her charred body there. Sanju and his parents were missing," added Anuj.

Meanwhile, SHO of Bilsanda police station, Manoj Kumar Tyagi, told TOI that an FIR was lodged against Sanju Singh, his father Ajay Pal Singh and mother Nanhi Devi under IPC sections 498 A (husband or his relatives subjecting a woman to cruelty), 304 B (death of a woman caused by burns or bodily injury), apart from sections 3&4 of Dowry Prohibition Act. "The accused are currently absconding but we will catch them soon," he said.
